Sender Policy Framework

1. SPF Record Setup

Add a TXT record to your DNS for example.com:

Type: TXT

Host: @

Value: v=spf1 include:_spf.google.com ~all

Adjust the "include:" based on your email provider:

  • Gmail/Google Workspace: include:_spf.google.com
  • Outlook/O365: include:spf.protection.outlook.com
  • SendGrid: include:sendgrid.net
  • Amazon SES: include:amazonses.com

2. DKIM Record Setup

DKIM setup varies by provider. Get your DKIM key from your email service:

Gmail/Google Workspace

Admin Console โ†’ Apps โ†’ Google Workspace โ†’ Gmail โ†’ Authenticate email

SendGrid

Settings โ†’ Sender Authentication โ†’ Authenticate Your Domain

Amazon SES

Verified Identities โ†’ Select Domain โ†’ DKIM

3. DMARC Record (Recommended)

Add a DMARC policy to protect against spoofing:

Type: TXT

Host: _dmarc

Value: v=DMARC1; p=none; rua=mailto:dmarc@example.com

Start with p=none (monitor only), then move to p=quarantine or p=reject once verified.

DNS changes can take up to 48 hours to propagate.

Why is this important?

  • โœ… SPF tells receiving servers which IPs can send email for your domain
  • โœ… DKIM adds a digital signature to verify emails weren't modified
  • โœ… DMARC tells servers what to do with failed SPF/DKIM checks
  • โœ… Proper authentication improves deliverability and prevents spoofing
